ICPSR Summer Program in Quantitative Methods – Scholarship

ICPSR (Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research) located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is an international consortium that provides leadership and training in data access, curation and methods of analysis.

Benefits of being an ICPSR member include data access, repository services as well as educational activities, including the annual Summer Program in Quantitative Methods and Social Research. General Sessions are offered in a dual-mode format: In-person (on the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor), livestream synchronous via Zoom, and asynchronous videos..

ICPSR’s summer program aims to “train a diverse community of scholars in statistical techniques and research methods. We empower our program participants, from undergrads to mid-career researchers, to immediately upgrade and sharpen the skills vital in their work to address real-world problems, develop policy solutions, and positively impact the future.”

The program includes both Topical Workshops and General Sessions.

Western is an ICPSR member institution, and as such attendees from Western are eligible for a discount on this training plus individuals have the option of applying for scholarships from ICPSR.

Unlocking the Power of ORCID iD: Empowering Researchers and Enhancing Scholarly Impact

ORCID provides a persistent digital identifier (an ORCID iD) that you own and control, and that distinguishes you from every other researcher.
In this presentation, researchers will learn the important role of ORCID iD in modern academia. We’ll explore how ORCID iD simplifies research identity management and once set up, streamlines adding professional information — affiliations, grants, publications, peer review, and more — to your profile. Researchers will learn how to create and maintain their ORCID profile, and delve into practical applications, including how to export BibTeX citations to use in the Canadian Common CV, or adding a trusted administrator (like a RA). Join us to harness the full potential of ORCID iD to simplify the management of your research outputs.

An interactive, hands-on workshop on how to write an effective opinion editorial (op-ed) for publication in The Conversation or other mainstream media outlets.

Open to faculty members, post docs and PhD candidates.

The Conversation is a daily independent online publication, delivering analysis and explanatory journalism from the research community directly to the public.

This is an interactive workshop where participants are encouraged to bring op-ed ideas to work on.

The workshop is presented by Western Communications and Western Research’s Knowledge Exchange, Research Impact and EDID in Research team.

Infographics: A Visual Storytelling Workshop

Monday, July 10, 9AM-12PM ET.

The goal for this session is to help participants unlock the potential of visual storytelling with infographics. This three-hour, hands-on workshop is designed for students, research staff and faculty members who want to elevate their skills in creating engaging, informative, and visually appealing infographics.

In today’s fast-paced, information-driven world, infographics have become an essential tool for conveying complex data and ideas in a simple and visually appealing manner. By the end of this workshop, you should have a solid foundation in infographic design and creation that you can use to translate complex data into informative and engaging visual narratives.

This is a hybrid event. You can join in-person at Western University (Arthur and Sonia Labatt Health Sciences Building, Room 232), remote (via Zoom), or asynchronously (post event video).

June 1 (10am-11:30): Telling Stories with Maps: an Introduction to StoryMaps Story Maps are a great way to combine your maps with narrative text, images, and multimedia content to create compelling, user-friendly web apps. In this workshop, you’ll follow along with a demonstration of building a Story Map from the planning stage to the publishing stage. Story Maps are a great way to feature your research project and share data, project descriptions, photos, videos, audio, and maps in an interactive and digital platform and can be embedded on department web-pages or shared as stand-alone URLs. Examples of Story Maps.
June 8 (1pm-2:30): Finding and Evaluating Scholarly Sources
June 13 (1pm-2:00): Leveraging Covidence: Learning to Use Systematic Review Software
Jun 22 (1pm-2:30): Organizing Research with Reference Management Tools
June 27 (1pm-2:30): Telling Stories with maps: an Introduction to StoryMaps* (in-person)
June 28 (10am-11:30): Creating Explorable, Interactive, Data Dashboards Learn how to turn static spreadsheets and datasets into interactive data dashboards. These data visualization tools can be used to highlight research in an explorable web-based platform. This workshop will walk through how to create a dashboard using research data from the Northern Tornadoes Project. Participants will be introduced to the ArcGIS Online platform, and the Dashboards application. Examples of Dashboards.
