SSHRC’s Storytellers Challenge

SSHRC’s Storytellers Challenge invites postsecondary students to show Canadians, in up to three minutes or 300 words, how social sciences and humanities research is affecting our lives, our world and our future for the better. Create a video or audio clip of up to three minutes or a text or infographic of up to 300 words featuring a research project or initiative funded by SSHRC and carried out at Western. Your story must be compelling, creative and clear.

Eligibility: Must be a Canadian resident 19 years of age or older. Must be enrolled at a Canadian postsecondary institution.

Deadline: Tuesday, January 16, 2024, 8:00 p.m. (eastern).

Prizes:
Phase 1
Twenty (20) Applicants in Phase 1 are eligible to receive $3,000 in exchange for SSHRC’s right to use their successful submission as marketing-communications content on SSHRC’s platforms (e.g., website, social media channels). The winning applicants of Phase 1 will be considered the 20 finalists. The finalists will be expected to attend an online research communications workshop organized by SSHRC (to be made available in English and French) before finalists present to the jury and to the Storytellers Showcase audience in Phase 2. Finalists will be responsible for their travel and accommodation costs. SSHRC will encourage Finalists’ institutions to support travel and accommodation costs.

Phase 2
From among the Phase 2 submissions, five (5) Phase 2 submissions will be selected as final winners. The final winners will receive an additional $1,000, in exchange for SSHRC’s right to use their winning submission as marketing-communications collateral.

Northern Scientific Training Program 2024-2025: Call for Applications

The Northern Scientific Training Program (NSTP) provides funding for senior undergraduates and graduate students conducting research in the North. 

This is a supplementary grants program which was put in place to help defray the high costs of conducting fieldwork in the North and to encourage students to develop a commitment to northern research. Students must also have other sources of funds to be eligible. The program funds thesis-based research projects on northern topics from all disciplines and in multi-disciplinary fields.

Amount: up to $6,000.00 in funding per year.

Deadline: 11:59 pm, November 10, 2023. The application portal will close after the deadline.

Criteria and Eligibility: The Program supports field research in any discipline – life, physical, human and health sciences – as long as the research has an essential orientation and impact on the North, and is part of the student’s thesis research.
The student must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and enrolled in a graduate or senior undergraduate program at a Canadian university. NSTP funding may be used for the purpose of dissemination or reporting back to the community. 
The research must relate directly to their thesis (undergraduate honors, Masters or PhD) research. Part time students are eligible for NSTP funding.
A student who is employed or remunerated for their research in the field cannot receive NSTP. Post-doctoral researchers and research assistants (with the exception of Northern post-secondary students) are not supported.
Field schools are not eligible.

Geographic eligibility:  The research activity and travel must be north of the sporadic discontinuous permafrost line (approximately 50 deg N), ANYWHERE in the Northern Hemisphere.

Application Process: IT IS EASY!  The application and statement of research require significantly less content and effort than NSERC, SSHRC or OGS!

Following the field season for which funding was provided, a brief report is required from the student through the online system.

Incomplete or incorrectly formatted applications will be returned to the applicant for revision.  Applications received at the deadline that is incomplete or requires changes may not be accepted.

International Development Research Centre (IDRC) Research Awards 2023-24

As part of Canada’s foreign affairs and development efforts, the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) champions and funds research and innovation within and alongside developing regions to drive global change. They invest in high-quality research in developing countries, share knowledge with researchers and policymakers for greater uptake and use, and mobilize global alliances to build a more sustainable and inclusive world.

IDRC offers research awards in 2023-24 related to these development areas or themes:  Climate-Resilient Food Systems,  Democratic and Inclusive Governance,  Education and Science,  Ethics in Development Research,  Global Health, Policy and Evaluation, and  Sustainable Inclusive Economies.All awards will be based in Ottawa except for the Global Health award that will be based in Nairobi.

If your research proposal is selected, you will join IDRC as a Research award recipient for a period of 12 months from 1 May 2023 to 30 April 2024 to undertake research on the topic you have submitted. You will receive hands-on experience in research and program management and support, grant administration, and the creation, dissemination, and use of knowledge from an international perspective. 

Amount: Salary for one year in Canadian Dollars CAD42,033 to CAD48,659

Eligibility:

  • For the awards based in Ottawa: Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, and students from low or middle-income countries, enrolled in a Canadian university with a work permit valid for full-time work (37.5 hours per week) in Canada until 30 April 2024.
  • For the Global Health award based in Nairobi, the candidates must hold Kenyan citizenship.  
  • Students who are enrolled in or who have completed a master’s program from a recognized university within the last three years
  • Preference will be given to students who have completed a master’s degree

IDRC – International Doctoral Research Awards 2022

IDRC (International Development Research Centre) International Development Research Awards (IDRA) are intended to build capacity and develop research skills in Canada and the Global South to improve the lives of people in the developing world.

The objective of the project is to strengthen the capacities of emerging researchers at Canadian universities, growing the cohort of researchers able to design, lead and carry out high-quality research that contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals and specific development outcome areas of particular interest to IDRC.

Amount: up to $20,000

Eligibility criteria:

  • You must be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada, or a citizen of a developing country (i.e., defined as ODA-eligible by the OECD Development Assistance Committee) in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • You must be enrolled at a Canadian university at the doctoral level.
  • You must have completed several courses of the doctoral program, but not necessarily all courses, when you submit your application. Note: if you are awarded, you must have completed all coursework and passed comprehensive exams before taking up the award.
  • Your research proposal must be approved by your thesis supervisor. Proof of this is required as part of the application.
  • Your proposed field research must be conducted for a doctoral dissertation and must take place in one or more developing countries.
  • Your field research must be relevant to one of following five development outcome areas to which IDRC aims to contribute through its work:

The Northern Scientific Training Program (NSTP) provides funding for senior undergraduates and graduate students conducting research in the North. 

This is a supplementary grants program which was put in place to help defray the high costs of conducting fieldwork in the North and to encourage students to develop a commitment to northern research. Students must also have other sources of funds to be eligible. The program funds thesis-based research projects on northern topics from all disciplines and in multi-disciplinary fields.

(The term “North” is normally understood for purposes of the Program to include those regions of Canada where there is both permafrost and ground ice, as per the map ‘Permafrost’, contained within the 5th Edition (1978 to 1995) of the National Atlas of Canada (see map at: http://arcg.is/1vGHyr); and the other seven circumpolar countries (Finland, Greenland (Denmark), Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden, and the United States (Alaska)).

COVID-19: The NSTP will allow students who received funds for 2021-2022 and who are unable to perform the planned fieldwork before March 31, 2022, to obtain an extension up to March 31, 2023. All students who wish to postpone their fieldwork to 2022- 2023 must submit a preliminary research report according to normal procedures. A question has been added to the research report form so that these students can identify that the project is postponed.
Students who requested to postpone last year and who have already submitted a report during the last competition do not need to submit a new report.

This award recognizes faculty, staff, and students at Western who are engaged in a range of efforts directed towards improving the quality of life for individuals and communities around the world.
