Mitacs – Accelerate Fellowships

The Mitacs Accelerate Fellowship provides long-term funding for a significant part of graduate degree programs:

  • Master’s students can complete an 18-month project (minimum $30,000 stipend)
  • PhD students can complete a three-year project (minimum $72,000 stipend)

The program allows for longer term research experience with an industry or not-for-profit partner than the traditional Mitacs Accelerate program. Participating students receive training that helps them ensure the success of their projects and further their careers.

Fellowships can form new Accelerate projects or be added to existing ones, and applications are accepted any time.

Note that Mitacs Accelerate programs require matching funding from the industry or not-for-profit partner and the supervision of a faculty researcher.

For more information or to discuss a potential project, contact Erin Azzopardi, Western’s Mitacs Representative.

CFREF-BrainsCAN Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

BrainsCAN has recently announced the second Request for Applications for their Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. This program is part of Western’s $66M BrainsCAN initiative, supported by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF). The CFREF investment is intended to enable researchers at the University, along with their national and international academic and commercial partners, to seek answers to fundamental questions regarding how we learn, think, move and communicate.

Training the next generation of researchers is a key aim of BrainsCAN, and postdoctoral fellows are the engines of innovative research. The BrainsCAN Postdoctoral Fellowship Program has been developed to attract the world’s most promising young neuroscientists. Successful applicants will be outstanding young scientists whose innovative work has already achieved impact, and who have demonstrated great potential for continued contributions.

Program Details: Up to 10 BrainsCAN Postdoctoral Fellowships will be awarded in the Spring 2018 competition, to highly qualified individuals from any country. Depending on prior experience, awards will be offered for 2 years (Tier II) or 3 years (Tier I), potentially renewable, with annual salary ranging from $55,000-$75,000 CAD (plus benefits) depending on Tier and on other funding, as well as an independent research/travel allowance of $3000-$5000 per year (depending on Tier). Tier I recipients will also have access to apply for internal BrainsCAN operating funds of over $12M for innovative research. Other benefits include Employment Insurance, Canada Pension Plan, a health care spending account, parental leave, and Western’s mentorship and professional development program for postdoctoral scholars, Competitive Edge (http://bit.ly/2tBfAtm).

Applicants must identify and contact potential advisors at Western before applying. An interdisciplinary, collaborative approach, involving affiliation with more than one lab, is strongly encouraged.

SSHRC Launches Talent Achievement Report

SSHRC has launched the Talent Achievement Report, a new, more user-friendly end-of-award electronic report that replaces the existing final report used by SSHRC fellowship and scholarship award holders. Similar to the Insight, Connection and Partnership Achievement Reports, this new report will improve SSHRC’s capacity to collect and measure outcomes and impacts of funded activities and reduce the administrative burden for award recipients. The information provided in these reports is of great value to SSHRC as it is a vital input to planning and strategy setting.

The new Talent Achievement Report is currently available to all doctoral and postdoctoral award recipients on SSHRC’s website. It is in a survey format on Fluidsurveys, a secure web platform, and must be submitted within six months of the end of the scholarship/fellowship period. More detailed information related to the Talent Achievement Report is available on SSHRC’s website.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact fellowships@sshrc-crsh.gc.ca.
