Canadian Science Policy Fellowships

The Canadian Science Policy Fellowship is now accepting applications from prospective fellows interested in undertaking a year-long policy position within a Canadian government host office beginning in September 2020. 

Amount: $70,000 – $80,000 salary (one year)
 
Eligible applicants must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident*
  • Hold a PhD in any academic discipline at the start of the fellowship
  • Participate full-time in a 12-month fellowship at the host office
  • Secure accommodation in the host city, and relocate to their host office as needed
  • Negotiate a leave of absence from their current employer, as applicable

The 2020 cohort of fellowships will begin in September 2020. Approved fellows receive remuneration from their host offices as well as professional development training and networking events facilitated by Mitacs.

Contribute to Science Policy in Canada

American Musicological Society Dissertation Fellowship

The American Musicological Society makes available up to three funded dissertation-year fellowships each year.

Amount: Fellows receive a twelve-month stipend, currently set at $22,000.

Deadline: December 17, 2018

Eligibility: Any student registered in good standing for a doctorate at a North American university who has completed all formal degree requirements except the dissertation at the time of full application is eligible to apply. Any submission for a doctoral degree in which the emphasis is on musical scholarship will be eligible.

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Media Law and Policy at Oxford

There is an  postdoc job opportunity at the Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy (PCMLP) for a 3 year post-doc.  This is an open fellowship so come with good ideas and research projects. And despite the title of the fellowship you don’t have to be a lawyer. Must be within 4 years of having completed a PhD. Deadline is July 25th.

Grade 7: £31,604 – £38,833 p.a.

The Fellow will undertake advanced research in the field of media law and policy, present their findings at conferences and workshops, and publish their research. The postholder will be permitted to undertake a small amount of lecturing and/or tutorial teaching, which may not exceed three hours per week.

The postholder will be a part of the Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy (PCMLP) and expected to contribute to its activities. The Head of the PCMLP is Dr Nicole Stremlau. Further information about the programme can be found on the PCMLP website.

Applicants must hold, or be close to completing a PhD/DPhil in Law, or a related discipline, with reference to media/socio-legal issues (candidates who already hold a doctorate will only be eligible if the doctorate was awarded within four years of the closing date for this position. Exceptions to this requirement will only be made for candidates who can demonstrate that they are still at an early stage in their academic career by reason of having taken a career break (e.g. for maternity leave, parental leave, illness or other personal circumstances); engage in high quality research; have the ability to manage their own academic research and associated activities; and play a full role in the intellectual life of PCMLP, the CSLS, and the Faculty of Law.

The Fellowship is for a fixed-term of 3 years, to commence as soon as possible.

The postholder will be based at The Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, Manor Road Building, Manor Road and will be eligible to apply to the Faculty’s Research Support Fund.

Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships 2018-19

2018-2019 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Banting Fellowship is the most prestigious postdoctoral fellowship award in Canada.

Deadline: September 19, 2018

Eligibility regulations are strict. Please ensure you refer to the Degree Completion dates and the emphasis on recruiting International and National scholars (only in exceptionally rare circumstances will a Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship be awarded to an applicant who is staying at the same institution where they completed their PhD, PhD- equivalent or health professional degree).

Mitacs – Accelerate Fellowships

The Mitacs Accelerate Fellowship provides long-term funding for a significant part of graduate degree programs:

  • Master’s students can complete an 18-month project (minimum $30,000 stipend)
  • PhD students can complete a three-year project (minimum $72,000 stipend)

The program allows for longer term research experience with an industry or not-for-profit partner than the traditional Mitacs Accelerate program. Participating students receive training that helps them ensure the success of their projects and further their careers.

Fellowships can form new Accelerate projects or be added to existing ones, and applications are accepted any time.

Note that Mitacs Accelerate programs require matching funding from the industry or not-for-profit partner and the supervision of a faculty researcher.

Postdoctoral Fellowship – Sherman Centre, McMaster University

The Lewis & Ruth Sherman Centre for Digital Scholarship, located in Mills Memorial Library at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, invites qualified candidates to apply for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship.

Background: Founded in 2012, the Sherman Centre engages in a wide range of activities to support and build the McMaster digital humanities (DH) community. A critical need that has become apparent in the course of this work is the inclusion of DH skill instruction, methodology, and theory in the curriculum, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. From the vantage point of the Sherman Centre, they see this as the beginning of a clear trend toward increased interest in introducing students to text analysis, data visualization, and GIS and, in general, increasing their technical fluency and competency.

Job Description: Working under the direction of the Academic and Administrative Directors of the Sherman Centre, the postdoctoral fellow will in general support the outreach and curricular activities of the Sherman Centre. In alignment with their own DH research agenda, the fellow will, in close collaboration with other Sherman Centre staff:

• offer training for DH tools and techniques
• offer consulting to faculty and graduate students to enable them to begin to include DH elements in their courses
• engage library staff in other functional areas to draw their expertise into the DH space and connect them to faculty who need support
• support the further development of DH workshops, talks, and events at the Sherman Centre
• prepare and deliver an undergraduate digital humanities introductory course, and
• connect with other digital humanities initiatives in the region and beyond.

Beyond these responsibilities, the fellow will participate actively in the life and activities of the Sherman Centre and represent it at key DH events such as the Digital Humanities Summer Institute (DHSI) and the annual Digital Humanities conference at the institution’s expense.

Eligibility: The Postdoctoral Fellowship is open to scholars who have completed their doctoral degree no earlier than June 1, 2014. Candidates must have defended their dissertation and received their PhD by July 1, 2018. The optimal candidate will have a Ph.D. in a DH-relevant discipline and a digital humanities research agenda. International scholars are invited to apply, however preference will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

BrainsCAN Funding Opportunity: Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

CFREF-BrainsCAN Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

BrainsCAN has recently announced the second Request for Applications for their Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. This program is part of Western’s $66M BrainsCAN initiative, supported by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF). The CFREF investment is intended to enable researchers at the University, along with their national and international academic and commercial partners, to seek answers to fundamental questions regarding how we learn, think, move and communicate.

Training the next generation of researchers is a key aim of BrainsCAN, and postdoctoral fellows are the engines of innovative research. The BrainsCAN Postdoctoral Fellowship Program has been developed to attract the world’s most promising young neuroscientists. Successful applicants will be outstanding young scientists whose innovative work has already achieved impact, and who have demonstrated great potential for continued contributions.

Program Details: Up to 10 BrainsCAN Postdoctoral Fellowships will be awarded in the Spring 2018 competition, to highly qualified individuals from any country. Depending on prior experience, awards will be offered for 2 years (Tier II) or 3 years (Tier I), potentially renewable, with annual salary ranging from $55,000-$75,000 CAD (plus benefits) depending on Tier and on other funding, as well as an independent research/travel allowance of $3000-$5000 per year (depending on Tier). Tier I recipients will also have access to apply for internal BrainsCAN operating funds of over $12M for innovative research.
