Western Humanitarian Award

This award recognizes faculty, staff, and students at Western, who are engaged in a range of efforts directed towards improving the quality of life for individuals and communities around the world.  Preference will be given to the recognition of activities undertaken by the candidate that have current or potential international impact.

Amount: A maximum of $5,000 may be awarded and must be used in support of humanitarian efforts as chosen by the recipient.

2018 International Policy Ideas Challenge

SSHRC and Global Affairs Canada recently announced the launch of the third annual 2018 International Policy Ideas Challenge.

Deadline: May 18, 2018

Amount: $3000 (for 10 winning projects)

Description: The International Policy Ideas Challenge is designed to identify concrete innovative solutions to emerging international policy challenges faced by Canada. Each proposal should offer solutions bridging at least two of the three policy areas under Global Affairs Canada’s mandate – foreign policy, trade, and international development.  Applicants will submit brief proposals. The authors of ten winning proposals will be given several months to further develop their ideas into policy briefs, which will then be presented to Government of Canada officials in a special day-long symposium, hosted by Global Affairs Canada in Ottawa in late Fall 2018.

Eligibility: graduate students (Master’s and PhD level) and post-doctoral fellows at a recognized Canadian post-secondary educational institution; applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada

Mitacs Globalink Research Award

Mitacs, a non-profit organization, is accepting applications for competitive international research opportunities for student travel from Canada. It is recommended that students apply by May 2018 for travel planned in Fall 2018.

The Globalink Research Award provides $6,000 for senior undergraduate and graduate students to undertake research projects abroad. Projects last 12–24 weeks and all disciplines are eligible.

Foreign Government Awards – Mexico

Competition open for Canadians: Foreign Government Awards – Mexico, 2018-2019

The Government of Mexico is offering scholarships to Canadians for study or research at participating Mexican post-secondary institutions.

Mitacs Globalink Program

Mitacs is accepting applications for competitive international research opportunities, including student travel to and from Canada. The deadline to apply is November 8, 2017, at 5 p.m. PT.

Projects last 12–24 weeks and are open to graduate students in all disciplines.  Funding varies by destination.

Students in Canada can do research in:

  • Brazil
  • China
  • France
  • India
  • Israel
  • Korea
  • Mexico
  • Tunisia

Note that, to apply, your faculty supervisor must be involved.

Graduate students can also apply to the Mitacs-JSPS Summer Program, which supports travel to Japan for a 10-week research project in Summer 2018.

Shastri Scholar Travel Subsidy (India/Canada)

Shastri Scholar Travel Subsidy Grants (SSTSG) SSTSG assist faculty members and graduate students with travel subsidies to participate in conferences, workshops, seminars and academic meetings within and between India and Canada with a view to establishing institutional and scholarly linkages.

Value: The Shastri Institute will provide up to CAD $1,000 to support the scholar’s international air fare (economy class).  Associated costs related to visas, meals, per diem and accommodation are not eligible under this grant.

CIGI – International Law Research Program – Post-Doctoral Fellowship Competition

The International Law Research Program (ILRP) of the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI)  invites applications for post-doctoral fellowships for research in one or more of the ILRP areas of focus.

Eligibility: This funding opportunity is open to citizens or permanent residents of Canada.  Doctoral students who are completing their SJD/PhD in Law and those who have completed such a degree in the last two years may apply.

Amount: The value of the scholarship is up to $80,500 per year, plus up to $18,000 in research allowance, with a duration between 12 and 24 months.

Deadline: Wednesday September 20, 2017

Candidates must apply through the SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowships competition.

IDRC Research Awards 2018

The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) has issued a call for applications for development research.

Deadline: September 6, 2017 by 4:00 PM (EDT)

Duration: January to December 2018 (12 months)

Successful applicants will undertake a one-year paid program of research on the topic they selected for the competition and receive hands-on experience in research management, grant administration, and the creation, dissemination, and use of knowledge from an international perspective. The proposed research must focus on one or more developing countries.

Eligibility: This call is open to Canadians, permanent residents of Canada, and citizens of developing countries pursuing a master’s or a doctoral degree at a recognized university OR who have completed a master’s or a doctoral degree at a recognized university. James M. Flaherty Program – Call for applications

Flaherty Research Scholarships support up to six Canadian research scholars traveling to Ireland for visits of between 4 and 6 weeks in duration.

If you are a PhD student or post-doctoral academic in the early stages of your research career, you may be eligible for the Scholarship. This award is designed to help scholars make contacts with researchers working in related research topics, with a view to widening and deepening the scholar’s research horizons, ideally leading to continued collaboration in future research.

It is the aim of the Flaherty Foundation to support individuals who are future leaders in their academic or post academic field, whose work will fulfill one or more of the following;

  • contribute to greater collaboration between both countries in areas of public service, economics and trade
  • contribute to a greater shared cultural understanding between countries
  • explore areas of strategic importance to both countries, such as energy, transport, communications, health, natural resources and environmental sustainability
  • open ways in which the Irish diaspora in Canada, and the Canadian diaspora in Ireland can deepen their engagement with their country of origin.

MITACS: Globalink Research Award

The objective of the Globalink Research Award  is to support research collaborations between Canada and select partner countries. The award is open to graduate students. Students in Canada may conduct research in Brazil, China, France (at French universities or Inria Research Centres), India, Korea, Mexico, and Tunisia. Project duration is 12-24 weeks.

Deadline: March 31, 2017

Amount: generally $5000, however varies by destination

Note that letters of support are required from host and home supervising profs.

Graduate students in Canada may also apply for the Globalink Partnership Award, which supports research projects abroad with industry partners in any country except the United States.  Applicants are encouraged to apply by June 9, 2017, for travel in Fall (2017).
