Getting People to Care about Your Research: Writing for Competitive Scholarships A well-written research proposal persuades reviewers that your project merits funding, and that you have the ability and the plan to complete it. Generally, a research proposal should contain all the key elements involved in the research process and include sufficient information for the readers to evaluate the proposed study. Learn how to write for funding competitions with Paul Schmidt (The Writing Centre). Registration is not required.

SGPS Student Info Sessions for the Tri-Agency Awards Competitions

SSHRC Doctoral Awards Student Info Sessions:

  • Wednesday, October 4, 2017 from 12:30pm-1:30pm EDT
  • Friday, October 6, 2017 from 12:30pm-1:30pm EDT
  • Wednesday, October 11, 2017 from 12:30pm-1:30pm EDT

SGPS staff will walk through the process of preparing a doctoral scholarship application at Western. These are lunch-hour sessions and all are held in the International and Graduate Affairs Building Classroom (IGAB 1N05) which is located on the main floor near the SGPS Office. The one-hour sessions are offered multiple times to accommodate as many students as possible. No registration is required.

Eligible continuing PhD students and Masters students planning to apply to a PhD program next year should plan to attend an information session. Information is also available on SGPS’s Student Finances pages: http://grad.uwo.ca/current_students/student_finances/sshrc.html.

The application process will take some time, so it is recommended that you start early to order your transcripts and prepare your application materials. CIHR – Doctoral and Master’s Awards

If your research is in the area of health, you may be eligible to apply to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).  Note that SSHRC has revised it’s Guidelines on Subject Matter Eligibility related to Health.

IDRC Research Awards 2018

The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) has issued a call for applications for development research.

Deadline: September 6, 2017 by 4:00 PM (EDT)

Duration: January to December 2018 (12 months)

Successful applicants will undertake a one-year paid program of research on the topic they selected for the competition and receive hands-on experience in research management, grant administration, and the creation, dissemination, and use of knowledge from an international perspective. The proposed research must focus on one or more developing countries.

Eligibility: This call is open to Canadians, permanent residents of Canada, and citizens of developing countries pursuing a master’s or a doctoral degree at a recognized university OR who have completed a master’s or a doctoral degree at a recognized university. Please note the additional eligibility requirements outlined on the website.

James M. Flaherty Program – Call for applications

Flaherty Research Scholarships support up to six Canadian research scholars traveling to Ireland for visits of between 4 and 6 weeks in duration.

If you are a PhD student or post-doctoral academic in the early stages of your research career, you may be eligible for the Scholarship. This award is designed to help scholars make contacts with researchers working in related research topics, with a view to widening and deepening the scholar’s research horizons, ideally leading to continued collaboration in future research.

It is the aim of the Flaherty Foundation to support individuals who are future leaders in their academic or post academic field, whose work will fulfill one or more of the following;

  • contribute to greater collaboration between both countries in areas of public service, economics and trade
  • contribute to a greater shared cultural understanding between countries
  • explore areas of strategic importance to both countries, such as energy, transport, communications, health, natural resources and environmental sustainability
  • open ways in which the Irish diaspora in Canada, and the Canadian diaspora in Ireland can deepen their engagement with their country of origin.

Bertram Scholarships

In recognition of the growing importance of good governance to all Canadian institutions, the Canadian Foundation for Governance Research is offering up to three annual Bertram Scholarship of $15,000 to PhD students registered at Canadian universities.  The scholarship will support the work of students who are conducting research into governance as part of their doctoral research project.

To be eligible for the scholarship, the doctoral research project should focus on a topic directly related to governance, including for example:

  • The importance of governance in enabling effective decision-making towards positive organizational or societal impacts;
  • Governance issues of interest to Canadian boards of public, private, government-agency and not-for-profit organizations;
  • Governance best practices through the Canadian perspective
